The geodes were cool but my son couldn't break them open himself. It took special tools and my husbands effort to break them open which took a way from the experience of doing it himself.

Grandson has opened one of the geods as was in the directions and loved the result. His parents are holding to 1 every 2-3 weeks to spread out the pleasure and so he can do research regarding the geodes to continue the learning process. Great learning tools

The grandkids love kits like these so they were thrilled to get them. Unfortunately, neither the 8 year old or the 6 year old (who is the bigger and stronger child) could break open the rocks. Their dad had to put them on a concrete step and wallop them with a hammer. The kids still had fun with them so they were a good present.

My Daughter loved this. She is very into collecting rocks of different shapes sizes and colors. This is a greata idea...Do suggest parental assistance with breaking these open as it can get messy. I do wish the geodes were a bit bigger but still a great idea!!!

Geodes were all the same clear color and very disappointing for my kids. Avoid purchasing these things, they're not worth the money.

These are excellent. Our local museum sells a variety of sizes for outrageous prices by the lb. As a general rule, the larger the Geode, the more impressive and colorful the contents...these are small but the effect is still there. Great family fun

My son loved these! They broke open to beautiful, sparkly geodes. We had fun breaking them open and he loves looking at them now. He asked for more kits!

The geodes were tiny (robin's eggs are bigger), typically not hollow, and generally undeveloped. The crystals most commonly looked like sparkly sand. Despite that, my niece enjoyed cracking them open and the formations, such as they were, were pretty. Because the geodes were not hollow, she really had to hit them hard to get them open. That spattered little shards everywhere. A lot of the geode got crushed too. Fortunately, we made sure she used the goggles. I was unimpressed, but she was happy.

To break the geodes open so that they were specimens worth keeping, I had to use a hammer and chisel. The 'sock' method in the description results in 'rubble.'

I bought this for my 6 year old son. It was a good kit, but the only way we could crack open the geodes was with a hammer and the geode inside a sock which breaks the geodes into small pieces. If you are hoping to crack the geodes in half you are going to need some special tools and a lot of patience. If you take the hammer and sock approach, don't expect to wear the sock again. Overall my son was happy with his geode pieces and we were able to crack through all of them in about 15 mins.
